Miscellaneous Narrative Design & Writing
Here you can find projects that are, at this time, incomplete but may have available briefs and GDDs showcasing design and narrative work.
Writing Samples
As well as my narrative work on the projects listed above, I write in my free time. Sometimes in prose, sometimes in styles emulating specific games. The buttons below lead to documents showcasing my writing in relation to the above works, and further down are other game related writing samples of mine.
Many conversations in the Fire Emblem series take place in the form of “supports”. Not all character combinations receive them, so I wrote dialogue in the same style for conversations no present in the games. Below is an example using characters from Fates. PDF
Azura: You are the ocean’s gray waves~
Lilith: …
Azura: Destined to seek, life beyond the shore just out of reach~
Lilith: …
Azura: Yet the waters ev-
Lilith: *coughs*
Lilith: Oh! I didn’t mean to interrupt. Don’t worry, I’ll get going now.
Azura: Wait.
Lilith: Hm?
Azura: Lilith… Why is it you always go so quiet when you hear my song?
Lilith: You noticed that, huh? Your voice is just so beautiful, Lady Azura. I would hate to talk over it, that’s all.
Azura: Thank you for the compliment, but you always lea-
Lilith: I need to go. I usually grab food for our steeds around this time, so I’ll see you around!
Azura: …
Azura and Lilith attained support level C.
Lilith: I can’t believe he really tried to eat my hair… So much for winning their hearts through
carrots.
Azura: …
Lilith: Lady Azura! I didn’t see you there… You’re staring.
Lilith: Is there something on my face?
Azura: My apologies, I simply wanted to tell you that your headdress is out of place.
Lilith: Really? Now that’s embarrassing… Here, how does it look?
Azura: It’s fixed.
Azura: Lilith, might I ask you something?
Lilith: Hm? Okay.
Azura: Are your ears the only part of your dragon blood that still linger when in human form?
Lilith: …Oh. You saw those.
Azura: Yes. I didn’t mean to pry, but last time I was trying to tell you that I’ve noticed you always
seem uncomfortable when I sing.
Lilith: …
Azura: I can’t force you to speak to me, so I-
Lilith: Then don’t.
Azura and Lilith attained support level B.
Lilith: Lady Azura, could I have a minute?
Azura: Of course, though I did think you were trying to avoid me.
Lilith: I guess I wasn’t as subtle as I’d hoped. I wanted to apologise for that, and for snapping at
you last time.
Azura: No need. I shouldn’t have tried to press the issue after the first instance.
Lilith: Would you think I was being rude if I asked why you wanted to bring it up?
Azura: Not at all. Lilith, I don’t know anything about your power, but I can at least tell that it makes
you different from the others.
Azura: I’m sure you know by now that my song isn’t simply music. I was worried it was affecting you
differently.
Azura: That maybe it was hurting you, for some reason.
Lilith: Why would you care about that?
Azura: Lilith… We’re allies. Isn’t it natural that I’d be concerned?
Lilith: No.
Azura: …
Lilith: …Is there anything else on your mind? I’ll answer honestly, if I can.
Azura: Never mind. I shouldn’t have forced the topic. You don’t need to tell me anything, Lilith.
Lilith: I want to.
Azura: …Alright. You told Corrin that you’re one of the Astral Dragons, but why did you come to
Nohr?
Lilith: Well, Corrin nursed me back to health whe-
Azura: I meant before that.
Lilith: …
Azura: …
Lilith: I can’t. I’m sorry. I said I’d give you answers, but there’s some things I just can’t talk about.
Azura: …We both have secrets we can’t share, don’t we?
Lilith: It looks that way… About what you wanted to know before: don’t worry about me.
Lilith: It’s not that anything hurts. More like, I simply don’t know how I should feel about that song.
I know it sounds strange.
Azura: Not at all. Thank you for speaking your mind.
Lilith: I was telling the truth before - you really do have a lovely voice. Thank you for letting me
hear it.
Azura and Lilith attained support level A.
As part of the Pixelles writing program, participants were tasked with creating a character for a game genre of their choice. As such, I designed the playable Olivya Revin, a changeling raised as the second line to the throne in an open world RPG. PDF
Game Information: Open-World Fantasy RPG (e.g. BG3, DA); 3 rd person POV
Role: Party Member; Possible Enemy
Name: Prince Olivya Revin (O-li-vya)
True name: Kathréftis
Age: 196
True age: 142
Sex & Gender: Gender-fluid; AFAB presenting (as Prince Olivya)
Race/Origin: Changeling. Presents as a moon elf.
Important Visual: Despite being able to change form freely, even when in disguise they choose to remain as
Olivya, physically. They will only shift if it is seen, in their eyes, as necessary.
Alignment: Lawful Neutral
Affiliation: The Kingdom of Staréfortia; House Revin
Archetype/Inspiration Characters: Lover; ESTP-A/Entrepreneur-Assertive; Inspired by Peony & Sharena (Fire Emblem Heroes), Ringabel (Bravely Default) and Tom Canty (The Prince and the Pauper)
3-4 keywords (personality traits): Callous; Flirty; Spoiled; Charismatic.
Wants/Needs/Motivation: To keep their current life & name; love. Not necessarily romantic, though that is what they claim to pursue. They want genuine connection but don’t know how to make it nor that they need it, not fully recognising the play-pretend relationships they have within their family for what they are. They aren’t delusional, but they don’t know better.
Other character relationships: Olivya has an almost professional relationship with their adoptive parents. Perfectly cordial, no real love there. Having quickly discovered that their daughter had been replaced, they made a deal with the changeling who had taken her place. To save face and not allow enemies or their people to learn that a royal child had gone missing, the changeling would take her place, so long as word never spread. As of late, their relationship is more strained.
Prince Olivya is very close to their younger sister, who never knew the original Olivya. Their relationship with their brother, the crown prince, is more strained. Whilst they believe they are accepted as his sibling now and they get along, there was a degree of animosity in Olivya’s childhood.
Though they’ve had plenty of lovers, Olivya hasn’t had many real friends up till now. An exception was the original Princess Olivya, a young elven girl who feared not the warnings of changelings who would steal children away in the night. She would sneak off at night to play with Kathréftis, who would show her life through a fae child’s eyes. Eventually, the children decided to switch places for a day, to give Kathréftis a taste of the royal life as Princess Olivya would have as much time as she desired to delve further into the forest from which her friend appeared. She never returned.
Note: Prince Olivya and Princess Olivya’s relationship can be positive or antagonistic after the latter’s introduction in the game, depending on player choices.
Summary: Consensual identity-stealing flirt.
Voice Notes: Precise, deliberate wording. They tend to speak in longer sentences but not a word is wasted, thus it never sounds like rambling. Clearly a trained speaker. In most cases, they will come across exactly how they wish to. If they wish to disguise rage, they will be calm, at worst giving a cold edge. If they sound flippant, they don’t mind if they do.
Audio Voice Quality: Alto. Smooth, playful. Somewhat dismissive at times, speaking as if they haven’t a care in the world. Speaks from the chest.
Background:
The second child of Staréfortia’s royal family, Olivya heeds adventure’s call when their parents force them into a political engagement. At least, that is their excuse for running away and disguising themself when the player learns of their royal status. In reality, Olivya is a changeling who traded places with the true royal child, and to keep order, the king and queen permitted this. Now, their elder brother is fading. A second-in-line princess’ death will cause far less disruption than that of the intended heir, and they were never the real Olivya to begin with. Logically, there is no reason for the changeling not to switch identities once again.
Yet, their name is not Cian. They are not a broad, muscular recovering general. They do not have an angular face. Their hair is not as black as night. They became Olivya at a mere seven years old, and that is all they have known for more than a century. It is not a persona; it is their identity.
And so, they run.
They run, so that they are not forced to surrender this name and face and the life they have led until now. Let the royal couple find another changeling to become Crown Prince Cian; even if they must from henceforth live in obscurity, Olivya will not die so that “Cian” may live in the public eye. However, that is easier said than done. As they travel the neighbouring country with the party, they slowly begin to realise how tyrannical House Revin can be, and the lengths that they will go to keep grasp of their secrets and power.
Unique weapon: Royal Lance gained as quest reward. When wielded by Olivya, increase MG.ATK and decrease probability of side-effects. Commissioned by the queen in case Olivya were to betray their house, it was designed to restrain Olivya’s magic. In Olivya’s hands, it can be mastered to gain control over their power.
Unique Ability: Shapeshift. Olivya can take on the form of allies, NPCs, or generic disguises. When taking on a persona, new dialogue options may appear.
Core Gameplay: Black Magic & Lance. Chance for random effect to occur when casting. Also specialises in social skills such as diplomacy or deception.
Additional Info:
1. Frequents art galleries and museums.
2. Proficient in the double bass.
3. Pineapple allergy.
4. Whilst having elegant handwriting in cursive, Olivya struggles to write with their letters separated.
5. Speaks 6 languages.
6. Princess Olivya would encourage them to use their shapeshifting ability to prank adults straying into the woods at night.
7. Cian was fooled for 2 years before overhearing the truth about their sibling.
8. Identifies as cis: for changelings, genderfluidity is the “default”.
9. Despite coming across as someone who simply wants to party all day, they are well read out of choice, spending their private time curled up with a book.
10. Growing up, they used their shapeshifting power to sneak out of the palace but would change back to their usual appearance once the coast was clear.
Following the character of Sir Ezekiel from Shadows Of Valentia, I wrote Weight of a Name, a short piece about how the amnesiac came to acquire the steed he rides throughout the game, whilst touching upon the only clue to his forgotten past. PDF
Did she truly not have a name?
Almost all female animals tended to be kept alive to be bred in future, unlike the males who were to be culled if deemed too weak. Ezekiel had for a while now been hearing whispers of a young horse whom nobody wanted to have anything to do with it.
A boorish child, who refused to eat the food given to her, but it would steal from her companions. As if that wasn’t enough, she would start fights with them even without such temptations, especially from the strong, adult studs who could easily kill her if provoked. It was a good thing she wasn’t quite fully developed herself yet: her legs weren’t quite long enough to make contact with the face belonging to the stable master’s daughter.
Already in the equivalent to her teens, and to die without a name. There was no use for a mare who couldn’t co-operate with the males and was too unruly with humans to even be gifted to a noble family.
The knight hadn’t entered the stables in search of her, yet it was impossible to ignore the constant stomping of hooves, and whinnies which sounded as if they had little purpose more than to attract attention.
It was obvious who this was. Curiosity overcame Ezekiel and rewarded him with a headbutt nearly strong enough to make him lose balance. No wonder the mare had been sectioned off.
Stepping out of the enclosure, he watched her. Silent. If he did not stir, neither did she. Her initial behaviour had seemed anti-social, but now that she had his full attention, the ruckus from earlier was gone in its entirety… Strange for a creature who apparently wanted to scare all else away.
Maybe the stable staff had been too quick to judge?
Leaving the nameless horse alone for a few moments, the man ignored her now resurgent cries and returned with a carrot in hand. Kneeling to make himself less menacing, he offered her the snack, only to be ignored. The more he tried, the further she backed away.
She only takes what she’s not supposed to have.
An idea struck the soldier. Standing once more, he turned as if to leave, but with the carrot behind his back in an almost comical manner. He paused, waiting for a response that never came. However, as soon as he so much as tensed to move forward, Ezekiel felt the vegetable ripped out of his hands. A smile was on his face as he turned to watch the mare eating it. “Feeling rebellious, are we?” Success.
This time with an arm leaning on the stable door, carrot dangling down, he tried the trick again with his head facing the other direction. An instant reaction. It wasn’t that the young horse didn’t want to be near humans: it would only interact on its own terms.
Technically speaking, the knight was supposed to have been spending this time inspecting the steeds, ready to choose one to ride into battle. He would have to meet with Emperor Rudolf now, but he had been told there was no rush with his decision. He could come back another day.
And that he did. Knowing that the staff had given up on feeding the girl - that they planned to leave her to either starve or learn how to behave at feeding time - Zeke tried his little method each day for the next few weeks. Somehow, he became too distracted to visit the other horses, despite that being his intent. The emperor didn’t seem to mind that truth, however, as he questioned how close he was to picking a warhorse. He even bore a smile, for some odd reason.
It took a while, but the day finally arrived when the mare did not turn as he attempted to feed her, arm outstretched and eyes watching. She hesitated at first, but eventually crept forward. If he were to ever make progress, Ezekiel had assumed she would snatch the snack and run back the first time. Instead, she demolished it there in front of him, licking his hand all the while.
“It seems like you finally trust me.” He wasn’t sure what had attracted him to this odd creature, but he was invested now. Perhaps he was merely one for those who stood out, such as the overly-kind Tatiana, and the imposing but good-willed Rudolf. A few times, the stable master had caught him with the girl, and attempted to convince him that she was a lost cause. So much for that.
With a steadiness, he raised a hand to stroke the horse, and was met with her attempt to bite him. “Shh.” Settled. Now, she closed her eyes and allowed the contact. “You’re rather stocky for a female, you know.” She would never beat out the strongest males in pure muscle, but the extent to which she’d grown in the month he’d shown her care… Even without that extra weight, she could easily be mistaken for a typical warhorse.
“No wonder the stable hands found you difficult. They don’t like a mare with violent behaviour. Especially one with the strength to do some serious damage. At least with the males, that would be useful on the battlefield…” Never would he be able to imagine this creature accepting the standard fate of being used to breed the next generation of mothers and steeds. “If you don’t start behaving, they’ll have to put you down.” She stirred, as if understanding the danger in his tone. “I don’t plan to hurt you, I promise. But they have no use for a female who doesn’t get along with others. There is another way to spare you, however…”
It was an unconventional idea; one that would have many claim that he’d be put at a disadvantage. But there was something about this animal’s feisty nature that gave him faith.
“Would you like to become my steed? Ah, but before that, you’ll need a name…” He had just the one in mind. A calling of importance, that Ezekiel had yet to discover anything about.
“I woke up on the shores near here, without any memories of my past, barring one thing… We have a horse without a name, and a name without an owner.” It was too perfect.
“Would you like to come with me, Nyna?”
